Efficient Design And Verification Of Digital Communication Systems

While third-generation (3G) wireless networks and handsets are finally being deployed in volume now, the next generation of wireless communication protocols already is being defined. Often referred to as 4G, different technologies compete for adoption. Two main candidates have evolved. One of them is the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE). This white paper discusses how to select a tool and methodology for efficient algorithm design, for which the entire flow must be considered while keeping the algorithm’s complexity in mind. What might be a suitable solution for small designs may be completely inadequate for designs of larger complexity. A tool or methodology employed for ad hoc experiments can become a maintenance nightmare when two or more algorithm designers get involved in the project. A seemingly low-cost solution quickly can become very expensive because add-on tools need to be purchased, or because a considerable amount of internal engineering effort must be spent to compensate for the lack of a robust tool infrastructure.
