The Week In Review: Sept. 9

By Ed Sperling
Mentor took a rather unusual tack on the ESL front, blurring the boundaries between companies just as the boundaries are blurring between various segments of the SoC ecosystem. The latest “deal” is a joint relationship between Calypto and Mentor in the high-level synthesis world. Mentor turns over Catapult C to Calypto, and Calypto integrates that with Mentor’s Vista. We’re not sure if they’re sharing the spoon or the soup bowl on this one, but they’re certainly sipping the same soup.  Mentor also signed a new distributor in India, Advanced Micronic Devices Ltd., to sell its simulation and analysis tools.

Synopsys acquired nSys Design Systems, a verification IP vendor, for an undisclosed sum. Having an IP portfolio plus a VIP portfolio makes it a much more compelling solution for customers. Cadence bought Denali last year for similar reasons.

Cadence and Imec teamed up to offer deep access to advanced technologies for universities in India. Given India’s prowess in software, this should be very timely.

Sonics celebrated its 15-year anniversary, which is interesting considering when it started most people didn’t expect the market to grow for on-chip network IP. Longevity silences all skeptics.
